Who Was Dot?
We often get asked about the inspiration not only behind our products but our name. Both come from the same wonderful dog, Dot. Dot was a loving and energetic German Shorthaired Pointer who was with us for over fourteen great years. The image of Dot as a seven-week-old puppy on her back tussling with her sibling over her but not giving up will always be with us. Her energy in play, determination, and general feistiness made her stand out and Dot was our little pup from that moment onward.
Her personality was endearing, challenging, and too funny. She charmed us. Her long floppy German Shorthaired ears with her tongue always hanging out made her look like a cartoon character at times. Underneath her goofiness, Dot was also sweet and devoted. She was an energetic, curious, four-pawed escape artist (because whatever is on the other side of the door has to be better than this side) who loved to run and be outside sniffling for something to chase. The beach, lake, and forest were her playgrounds where she would jump in to swim or run for what seemed like a marathon. To keep up with her, we would ride mountain bikes. Walks were not only around the neighborhood block but runs for miles in nature. We loved trying to keep up with her. She never knew how to be anything but good and energetic.
Dot was so energetic and athletic we nicknamed her Dot the Wonder Dog. With her active lifestyle, Dot needed more than kibble could offer her to keep her moving, happy, and healthy. Kibble often left her with itchy skin, an upset stomach, or not enough nutrition to maintain the lifestyle she so desired. After trying many kibbles we started cooking for her using meal guides from Four Paws, Five Directions A Guide to Chinese Medicine for Cats and Dogs by Cheryl Schwartz. Our vet suggested that adding some nutrition would be good because people food lacked some essential vitamins and minerals for pets. Thus started our journey to create a supplement to support Dot’s energetic lifestyle. By drawing on my lifelong knowledge of nutrition and joint support knowledge from treating personal injuries. As a scientist, I could research pet nutritional needs in addition to using the book and what worked for us. Our vet gave us tips as well. We started with food-based nutrition because it is easy to adsorb and has full spectrum nutrition not just extracts or active ingredients. Having better nutrition helped improve Dot's health, longevity, and happiness, even according to our vet. Now we bring this exceptional supplement to you so you can bring out the wonder in your pet!
Initiatives
Production Initiatives
Our environment is important to all species on the planet and our health as well as our enjoyment of the outdoors. Here at Dot's Natural Pet Products, we believe in keeping our environmental footprint as small as possible. We recycle all materials from our workshop and home that can feasibly be recycled. We use LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances for our production and reduce our waste by buying and selling in bulk whenever possible. Instead of always using new boxes, we reuse boxes received for our shipping when feasible.
Green Initiatives
Climate change affects us and future generations socially, physically, and economically as well as impacting endangered species. We donate to Plant One Billions of Trees, the Nature Conservancy's program to slow down climate change. Dot's donates to plant in the rainforest of Brazil, sometimes called the "lungs" of the planet. We donate enough to be carbon neutral.
Social Initiatives
Women are the economic backbone of their families and several parts of Central America have been experiencing upheaval, we support women-owned businesses in these countries. We do so through Kiva, a non-profit organization that gives small business loans to women-owned enterprises.
Pet Initiatives
We love animals. So Dot's donates money to a local non-profit no-kill shelter to help homeless pets find homes. When we do get new pets, we only adopt pets. We never shop for new pets because adopting helps bring pets out of shelters.
Personal Initiatives
Currently, we have "adopted" some homeless neighborhood cats. We feed them high-quality food with Dot's Natural Pet Products to supplement their diets. This helps them be happier and healthier as well as protects some wildlife from being food for these poor cats. They have ear clips that show that are spayed and neutered but have been released because they are too feral to be adopted.
